Massage in Germany —
what the Rezept is about
Newcomers usually discover the German system the confusing way: a friend says «get a prescription», the internet says massage is covered, and the studio down the road has never heard of any of it. All three are true, because they are talking about different things.
Two different worlds
In Germany, «massage» covers two things that are legally quite far apart. One is Physiotherapie: a medical profession with a state qualification, working on a doctor's referral, documenting what they do, and billed to your health insurance. The other is wellness massage — what I do: not a medical service, no prescription, no insurance, and by law not allowed to claim it treats anything.
There is a third category you will run into, the Heilpraktiker: a separately regulated profession, licensed by state exam to work with illness without being a doctor. Different again, and usually not covered by public insurance either.
What a Rezept actually is
A Rezept (Verordnung) is a referral your GP or a specialist writes. It names the treatment, the number of sessions and the region, and you take it to a Physiotherapie practice. You normally pay a small statutory share yourself and your Krankenkasse covers the rest. Waiting lists in Berlin are real: a few weeks is normal.
What a Rezept is not: a voucher you can spend anywhere. Bringing one to a wellness masseur does nothing — I cannot work on it and cannot sign it off. If you have one, use it where it is worth money.
What the Krankenkasse pays for
| What | Referral needed | Insurance pays | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physiotherapie | yes, a Rezept | yes, minus your share | weeks |
| Heilpraktiker | no | usually not; some private plans | days |
| Wellness massage | no | no | often same week |
Which one you need
Go to a doctor first if the pain is sharp, appeared suddenly, follows an injury or surgery, comes with swelling, numbness or fever. That is the route where insurance is on your side, and a massage is not the first step.
Come to me if you spend the day at a desk and your shoulders are stone by the evening, if something pulls between the shoulder blade and the spine, if you train and want the loaded muscle chains worked, or if you simply want an hour where somebody competent handles your back. None of that needs a referral, and you can usually get an appointment this week.
How booking works here
You do not need to phone anyone in German. Pick a free slot in the calendar on the English homepage, or write on WhatsApp — English, Russian or Ukrainian, all fine. There is no deposit and no card on file; you pay after the session, on site. Cancelling is free at any time.
One German habit worth knowing: appointments are taken literally. Arriving fifteen minutes late does not push the end fifteen minutes later — the next person is already on their way. If you are running late, one message is enough.

Frequent questions
Do I need a prescription for a massage in Germany?
Not for a wellness massage. A Rezept is only needed for Physiotherapie, which is a medical service billed to your health insurance. Wellness massage is booked directly and paid on site.
Does the Krankenkasse pay for massage?
Only for Physiotherapie on a doctor's referral, and then minus your own statutory share. Wellness massage is not covered by public insurance.
What is the difference between Physiotherapie and wellness massage?
Physiotherapie is a medical profession working on referral and billed to insurance. Wellness massage is not a medical service: no prescription, no insurance, no diagnosis and no treatment claims.
Can I book without speaking German?
Yes. Write on WhatsApp in English, Russian or Ukrainian, or pick a slot in the calendar on the site. No phone call needed.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Often within the same week, sometimes the same day. Free slots are shown in the calendar on the homepage.
